Integrated spatial solution

One- and two-story school and daycare facilities were delivered ready-made to the same plot in a natural environment. The facilities are divided into three parts so that the daycare and school facilities are connected by common dining and exercise facilities. In addition, there are large courtyards and outdoor play areas in the middle of the buildings.

Standard model buildings enabled fast delivery time for the new facilities, but at the same time they also function as a sustainable spatial solution and serve the constantly growing use in the Keimola area.

In May 2019 the Sophie Mannerheim School for children with special needs were completed in the protected Kivelä hospital area in Helsinki.

The old main school premises of the special need school, which provides education in many locations, were found to be unsuitable for educational use. The school needed new premises that would be within safe connection from the hospital area.

A building tailored for special needs school use

The decision was made to build the Sophie Mannerheim school as a modular and flexible building from Parmaco Group. The construction technology based on Fixcel’s patented steel cells offers the possibility of modifying the building according to space needs by adding or removing modules. The steel-framed building is also very safe for indoor air, as steel does not provide a growing ground for mold or microbes.

The Sophie Mannerheim school building, which was completed at the end of a five-month construction period, is a three-story building with a central corridor. The school building is equipped with three entrances, contains general and subject-specific teaching spaces, such as craft classes, music, and physics and chemistry classes. In addition to these, the building also has a dining room, library, and a 300-square-meter gym area. The plan is to organize teaching in the new school building for grades 1-9 at least for 5–10 years.

A dynamic school building suitable for a traditional environment

The dynamic school building met the need for space and the beautiful school area remained in use by the children throughout the three-year renovation work. At the same time, the modern dynamic school building became a part of the nearly 140-year history of the Messukylä schoolyard.

Currently, the Messukylä school premises provide education for approximately 350 students from preschool to sixth grade. The dynamic building, delivered by Parmaco in 2019, is the latest addition to the available school premises.
